Take Stock in Children  TSIC has been the recipient of Heron Creek Community Foundation (HCCF) grants the past four years.  Through their unique Public/Private Partnership, our grant dollars are double matched dollar to dollar by Florida Prepaid Foundation Scholarship program.  This program provides an incentive to students who improve grades and invest the time needed to be fully prepared for college. For more and Grant Follow up reports see below.

North Port students Gina Miank and Dylan McKee are the TSIC scholars who are benefiting from HCCF grants and a third will soon be named.

Gina will be starting her junior year at North Port High School.  She took four advanced courses last year and will be dual enrolling at SCF this year.  She has a 4.43 GPA (weighted for advanced classes) and was accepted into the National Society of High School Scholars.  She participates in the YMCA leaders club, ju jitsu and golf, and works as a baby sitter after school.  She plans to study medicine in college.

Dylan will be starting his senior year at North Port High School and is dual enrolled at SCF.  He is taking additional courses at SCF this summer, which will put him only 9 credits short of an AA degree upon his high school graduation next June.  He has a 3.04 GPA, participates in the North Port Police Explorers program and works 30-35 hours each week.

Re: 2015 Grant Report

Dear Mr. McQuain,

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, I am pleased to report that the Heron Creek Community Foundation’s generous investment in Take Stock in Children (TSIC) of Sarasota County has allowed a deserving North Port student to enter our program and have the opportunity to fulfill his dream of a college education.

As you know, our students are required to maintain positive behavior, remain drug and crime free, achieve solid academic standing, regularly meet with their assigned volunteer mentor, and participate in TSIC college success programs throughout their enrollment in TSIC.  Upon their high school graduation, their scholarship awaits them for the next step in their academic journey to the Florida college of their choice.  Thanks to the Heron Creek Community Foundation, another North Port student will have the opportunity to take that next step.

Students in our program are selected following an extensive application process involving teacher recommendations, verification of financial need and risk factors, student essays and a personal interview with representatives of the TSIC Board of Directors.  It is my pleasure to update you on the TSIC student who has been selected from this applicant pool and designated as the 2015 Heron Creek Community Foundation Scholar:

Dylan ??????? is a 12th grader at North Port High School and is a full-time dual enrolled student at SCF.  Dylan is working hard at his college level courses and will be only a few credits shy of his AA degree upon his high school graduation.   Dylan has a 3.04 GPA and regularly meets with his mentor and his College Success Coach.  He balances his heavy academic load while working 30-35 hours each week.  He also participates in the North Port Police Explorers program.

The Heron Creek Community Foundation’s $4,250 grant was used to sponsor Dylan in the Take Stock in Children program.   A four-year college scholarship was purchased for Dylan with matching funds from a local donor as well as the Florida Prepaid College Foundation Project STARS (Scholarship Tuition for At-Risk Students).  This prepaid scholarship has been set aside for Dylan to use upon high school graduation and successful completion of the TSIC program.  Along with his scholarship, Dylan receives mentoring, college success coaching and college preparation training from TSIC.  In addition to weekly meetings with his mentor, Dylan meets monthly with his staff college success coach, who ensures he continues to meet TSIC academic and behavioral guidelines.  As a senior this year, Dylan attends monthly college preparation workshops covering topics such as: college application process, financial aid to cover non-tuition costs, essay writing, study skills, community service, digital citizenship, personal finance and career options.

We would also like to take this opportunity to update you on your 2014 Heron Creek Community Foundation Scholar:

Gina ????????is an 11th grader at North Port High School and is a full-time dual enrolled student at SCF.  She has a 4.4 GPA and plans to study nursing.  Gina regularly meets with her mentor and her College Success Coach.  She volunteers at the YMCA, and has logged over 100 community service hours there.  Gina also works as a food server after school and on weekends.

Dylan and Gina are wonderful examples of the more than 300 local students who have been afforded the opportunity to enroll in programs of higher education through the support of community partners like you.  However, our work continues.  More students are in need of the unique opportunity provided by Take Stock in Children.   Continued investment by The Heron Creek Community Foundation would allow even more North Port children the chance to break the cycle of poverty through education.  We would be most grateful for your consideration.

If I can provide any additional information on your previous scholarship investment or the present opportunity to sponsor incoming TSIC students, please contact me at (941) 735-0807 or melanie@takestocksarasota.org. On behalf of Dylan and Gina, whose lives have been forever changed by your support of Take Stock in Children, please know that we sincerely thank you.  Together, we are making a difference for kids.

                                                                                                Kind regards,
