Take Stock in Children, Inc. (TSIC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for a post-secondary education.  They offer full scholarships to students, provide caring volunteer mentors, and instill hope for a better life.  Their comprehensive services begin in middle school, continue through high school and include students’ transition into college and a career.
TSIC has been the recipient of Heron Creek Community Foundation (HCCF) grants the past two years.  Through their unique Public/Private Partnership, our grant dollars are double matched dollar to dollar by Florida Prepaid Foundation Scholarship program.  This program provides an incentive to students who improve grades and invest the time needed to be fully prepared for college.
Participating students are required to maintain positive behavior, remain drug and crime free, achieve solid academic standing, regularly meet with their assigned volunteer mentor, and participate in TSIC college success programs throughout their enrollment in TSIC.  Upon their high school graduation, their scholarship awaits them for the next step in their academic journey to the Florida college, university, or vocational program of their choice.
North Port students Gina Miank and Dylan McKee are the TSIC scholars who are benefiting from HCCF grants.
Gina will be starting her junior year at North Port High School.  She took four advanced courses last year and will be dual enrolling at SCF this year.  She has a 4.43 GPA (weighted for advanced classes) and was accepted into the National Society of High School Scholars.  She participates in the YMCA leaders club, ju jitsu and golf, and works as a baby sitter after school.  She plans to study medicine in college.
Dylan will be starting his senior year at North Port High School and is dual enrolled at SCF.  He is taking additional courses at SCF this summer, which will put him only 9 credits short of an AA degree upon his high school graduation next June.  He has a 3.04 GPA, participates in the North Port Police Explorers program and works 30-35 hours each week.
