NORTH PORT SUN ARTICLE published soon after the tournament
The Heron Creek Community Foundation (HCCF) recently held its 8th annual Golf outing at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club. The temperature for the day was perfect for, some 144 golfers who participated in our event. The fun filled day of golf on the newly renovated Heron Creek course was changed from January to April this year, and it was a huge success, raising just under $30,000 for local charities. This is the foundations main fund raiser for the year, which paves the way for annual grant distributions, which last year awarded a total of $62,000 dollars to twenty non-profit organizations in the City of North Port. Each year, needy organizations throughout North Port submit grant applications, which are reviewed by a grant committee to ensure that all available funds are put to good use throughout the community. According to Jerry Stevens, president of the HCCF, “approximately 98 cents of every dollar goes back into the community through the grant process. We are extremely proud of the fact that our dedicated volunteers allow us to keep administrative costs to a bare minimum”.
In attendance this year was one of the founding members who conceived the idea for starting the Heron Creek Community Foundation, Mr. Sandy Edinger. According to Sandy the idea was conceived in 2007 however the actual date of the recognized filings was not until 2011. The HCCF is affiliated with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation out of Venice, Florida. Sandy put a foursome together for the event and stated how pleased he was with the progress and growth of the organization. Membership has grown every year since its inception with excellent support and generosity from the nearly 830 homeowners in the Heron Creek community. Managed by a rotating Board of Directors, the organization has donated more than $250,000 to local charities since its inception.
Several local businesses also helped sponsor the event and there were two platinum sponsors; Modern Woodman Financial Services of Port Charlotte and Affordable Golf Cars of Venice, who helped set a new record for the amount of donations received. Numerous awards were distributed at the banquet that was held at the club. All of the sponsors received heartfelt applause at the banquet for their support, as everyone in attendance gazed around the room at huge checks made payable to local charities.
