The Heron Creek Community Foundation is pleased to announce grant recipients for 2021. The application process included an assessment of the current needs of the citizens of North Port by contacting the North Port Police Department, North Port Schools, the Department of Social Services in North Port, churches, other foundations and charitable organizations. A total of $51,300 was awarded  to seven non-profit organizations.

Following is a summary of each agency’s mission and the purpose for the grant request. The Board looked for proactive as well as reactive services for the identified needs. A web site address for each is also provided for those who wish to further learn about them.


First Tee $25,000
Mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing services for educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. It is a national program dedicated to youth development through teaching/mentoring of life skills, core values, social skills, teamwork and education. Grant for outreach and a year long program for 200 North Port youth from 4-year-old through high school college prep programs. First Tee staff work with the students in the North Port Schools as well as working with the local Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and at the golf facilities at Heron Creek Golf and Country Club.   https://www.firstteesarasotamanatee.org/


Meals on Wheels North Port $6,400
Prepares and delivers meals to North Port residents who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Grant to cover water and utility bills for 2022.   http://nothportmealsonwheels.org/


Safe Place & Rape Crisis Center $5,100
Mission is to stop domestic and sexual violence in the community. Grant to cover operational expenses of the North Port office and a small percentage of the SPARCC Emergency Shelter. https://www.sparcc.net


Child Protective Services $5,000
Mission is the prevention, intervention, and treatment of child abuse. Grant supports the therapy program in North Port which provides mental health treatment to children and families. https://cpcsarasota.org/


Take Stock in Children $4,000
Mission is to break the cycle of poverty through the achievement of higher education for at-risk, low-income students. Grant purchases a 4-year college plan scholarship. https://takestocksarasota.org/


Loveland Center $3,000
Mission is to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities live their lives to their fullest. Grant will provide programmatic cleaning for health and safety in the North Port office for one year. https://lovelandcenter.org/


Good Samaritan Pharmacy & Health Services, Inc. $2,800
Mission is to provide free medication and medical services to uninsured and financially needy members of North Port as to positively affect their quality of life. Grant will cover a portion of medical services provided to North Port citizens.

Additionally, All Faiths Food Bank was the recipient of this year’s food drive. Due to covid monetary donations were requested rather than food stuffs. A total of $21,500 was collected from Heron Creek residents and given directly to All Faiths Food Bank.
